PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis)

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis)

Protect yourself against HIV

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a once-daily medication that significantly reduces the risk of acquiring HIV. When taken correctly, PrEP is up to 99% effective. At Suffolk Street Surgery, we offer private, confidential PrEP consultations as part of our commitment to inclusive, proactive sexual healthcare.

PrEP is intended for individuals who are HIV-negative but at higher risk of exposure to HIV. This may include people who do not consistently use condoms, those with a partner living with HIV (particularly with an unknown or detectable viral load), or those who have recently had a sexually transmitted infection (STI). It is also relevant for those engaging in sex work, chemsex, or who have used PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) in the past.

Is PrEP Right for You?

You may benefit from PrEP if you have:

  • Unprotected sex with partners of unknown or positive HIV status
  • A partner with HIV who is not virally suppressed
  • Recent STI diagnosis, particularly syphilis or a rectal infection
  • Chemsex or transactional sex
  • Been trying to conceive with a partner who has HIV

During your initial consultation, we will discuss your health, conduct relevant blood tests (including kidney function), and screen for STIs. If you are suitable for PrEP, we can arrange a prescription and register you for free HSE PrEP medication if eligible.
